Umberto Palermo is the emerging face of Italian design and the renowned tradition of Italian car design. His passion and talent led him to found UP Design in 2010, located in Rivoli, near Turin. his company was established with the ambitious goal of making a significant contribution to the development of automotive, product, and industrial design.
Under Palermo’s visionary leadership, UP Design has grown rapidly, becoming a benchmark in the industry. The company employs a team of over 40 highly qualified professionals, working in a state-of-the-art 5,000 square meter production facility. This modern structure allows UP Design to operate efficiently and effectively, meeting the needs of a diverse and international customer audience.
The well-known designer Umberto Palermo set himself the ambitious goal of reinterpreting the iconic Alfa Romeo 4C. His innovative vision led to the creation of the Alfa Romeo Mole Costruzione Artigianale 001, a design masterpiece that aims to blend the classic elegance of Alfa Romeo with contemporary and cutting-edge lines. This exclusive project was conceived to be presented at the fourth edition of the Turin Salone dell’Auto, a prestigious event that provides the ideal showcase to unveil such an anticipated and revolutionary creation.
The prototyping process for creating a supercar of this magnitude, within tight deadlines, requires an extremely meticulous and dynamic approach. It is essential to adopt rapid iterations that allow for continuous refinement of the design, while ensuring an effective workflow. This includes the precise conversion of CAD data, which is crucial for moving from the design phase to the actual creation of the prototype.
So, how is it possible to have a preview of the design lines without proceeding to a physical mockup?
Shin Software, thanks to its proprietary SHOWin3D platform, has developed an interactive 3D viewer in virtual reality (VR) for the Alfa 4C Mole, using the HTC Vive VR device. This viewer allows for an immersive and realistic exploration of the car in various scenarios, thanks to PBR rendering and the Image Based Lighting system, which ensure an accurate representation of materials.
Virtual prototyping with SHOWin3D has reduced time and costs, eliminating the need for expensive physical mock-ups and allowing for rapid iteration cycles. The platform has enabled the creation of two complementary tools: an immersive prototyping tool for designers and a viewer for the end-user, offering the possibility to see the supercar in multiple scenarios and with different color variations. Thus, SHOWin3D optimizes the design process and offers an engaging and personalized experience to users.
